Isolating Sulphate Salts on a Staircase Wall in Harrogate

Overview

This project involved isolating sulphate salts that had contaminated the plaster on a staircase wall in a Harrogate property. Due to the height and positioning on the stairwell, the job required careful preparation and access to ensure a clean and safe installation. The contamination had been caused by a previously leaking chimney, which had since been repaired, but the salts remained active within the plaster.

The Problem

Sulphate salts often react to changes in humidity, appearing as damp patches even when the underlying leak has been resolved. In this property, the issue was intensified because the affected area was at the top of the house. Warm, humid air naturally rises and condenses on cooler surfaces, making the salt-contaminated plaster appear even wetter.

Our Solution

To isolate the sulphate salts and prevent them from affecting the new finish, we installed the Isotherm system. This involved preparing the sound areas of existing plaster, applying the isolating membrane and then skimming the surface to blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls. The system provides a stable, insulated barrier that prevents salts from migrating through to the finished plaster.

As part of our standard aftercare advice, we recommended using an anti-mould paint once the new plaster had fully dried. This helps protect the area from future issues caused by moisture or fluctuating humidity levels.

The Result

The staircase wall is now dry, stable and visually uniform, with the sulphate salts fully isolated behind the new system. The homeowner no longer experiences damp patches on humid days, and the area is ready for decoration once cured.
