Signs your cellar needs waterproofing
Cellars sit below ground level, so the walls and floor are in contact with damp soil and, at times, water under pressure. These are the problems we see most often.
Damp walls and floors
Dark patches, flaking paint and crumbling plaster at low level are signs of moisture coming through the masonry.
Standing water
Water collecting on the floor after heavy rain usually means groundwater is getting in and needs managing, not just sealing.
Salt deposits
White, fluffy salts on the walls are left behind as water moves through the masonry and evaporates.
Musty smells and mould
A damp cellar raises moisture levels in the rest of the house, leading to smells, mould and damage to stored belongings.
Rotting timbers
Joists and timbers in contact with damp cellar walls are at risk of wet rot and dry rot.
Failed previous work
Old tanking or a failed sump pump can let water back in. We regularly put right waterproofing that has stopped working.
Tanking or a cavity drain membrane?
There are two main ways to waterproof a cellar. Tanking is a barrier system, where a waterproof coating or render is applied to the walls and floor to hold water back. A cavity drain membrane works differently. Water is allowed to reach the wall, then controlled behind a studded membrane and drained away, often to a sump and pump.
The right choice depends on how wet the cellar is, the condition of the walls and how you plan to use the space. Many cellars need a combination of both. Our guide to waterproofing and tanking explains the differences in more detail.
- A survey of the cellar before any recommendation is made
- Systems designed around how the space will be used
- Sump and pump systems where water needs to be removed
- A full guarantee, with the option of a QANW insurance-backed guarantee

How we waterproof your cellar
Every cellar is surveyed first, so the system fits the space and how you want to use it.
Survey
We inspect the cellar, take moisture readings and look at drainage and ground levels outside.
Recommendation and quote
We explain which system suits your cellar and how you want to use it, and confirm the cost in writing.
Installation
Our team prepares the walls and floor and installs the agreed system, including any drainage or sump.
Guarantee and aftercare
Your work is covered by our guarantee, and we can service sump pumps to keep them working properly.
Your survey is carried out by a qualified surveyor
All Dry was founded by Simon Cooper, known throughout the industry as Damp Sam. Every survey is carried out by a surveyor holding the recognised industry qualifications, not by a salesperson with a moisture meter.
The Certificated Surveyor in Remedial Treatments and the Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing are the two qualifications that matter in this trade. We hold both. More about the team.

Cellar tanking questions
Most cellars can be made dry. The right system depends on how much water is getting in and how you want to use the space, which is why we always survey first.
Not always. If water is entering under pressure or the cellar floods after heavy rain, a cavity drain membrane with a sump and pump is usually the most reliable solution.
Yes. Waterproofing is the first stage of any basement conversion. Find out more about our basement conversions.
It depends on the size of the cellar, the system needed and the condition of the walls and floor. We confirm the cost in writing after the survey.
