Areas We Cover
South Yorkshire & West Yorkshire · CSRT qualified surveyors · PCA approved
We are based in Barnsley and have been treating damp across Yorkshire for more than 25 years. Eight towns, hundreds of villages between them, and a surveyor who knows why a Huddersfield gritstone wall behaves nothing like a Doncaster brick terrace.
Why local knowledge changes the diagnosis
Damp is not the same problem everywhere. The building stock, the ground and the weather differ enormously across the area we cover, and so do the causes.
Geology and construction
Sheffield's porous Coal Measures sandstone, Wakefield's magnesian limestone and Huddersfield's millstone grit all behave differently when they get wet, and all three are damaged by the same well-meaning cement repointing. Doncaster's high water table drives moisture upward far harder than the hillsides of the Colne valley ever will.
Weather and exposure
The Pennine fringe around Huddersfield and Holmfirth takes substantially more wind-driven rain than the flat land east of Doncaster. That single difference changes which type of damp we expect to find before we have even entered the property.
It is why every job starts with a survey rather than a quote, and why we would rather tell you no damp proofing work is needed than sell you a treatment that was never going to fix it.
South Yorkshire
Our home patch. Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, plus every village between them.
Damp Proofing Barnsley
Our home town and the base we work from, so we are usually on site the same week. Barnsley's stone terraces and former colliery housing bring the full range of problems: failed slate damp proof courses, cracked pointing after ground movement, and cellars that were never built to be dry.
Damp Proofing Sheffield
Built across steep valleys, so external ground frequently sits above internal floor level and bridges the damp proof course. Porous Coal Measures sandstone, solid walls and near-universal cellars in the Victorian terraces.
Damp Proofing Rotherham
Flood history at Catcliffe, Treeton and Bramley leaves salts in plaster that keep drawing moisture for years. Elsewhere it is failed slate DPCs in the steel-worker terraces and ground movement across the pit villages.
Damp Proofing Doncaster
The Humberhead Levels put the water table close to the surface, so rising damp appears faster and more severely here than anywhere else we work. Blocked subfloor airbricks are endemic on the interwar colliery estates.
West Yorkshire
Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Dewsbury, covering the Calder valley, the Heavy Woollen district and the Pennine fringe.
Damp Proofing Leeds
More back-to-back housing than any other UK city. One external wall and no through ventilation means condensation is structural rather than behavioural. Cellars are standard, and the mill conversions put rooms below ground.
Damp Proofing Wakefield
Magnesian limestone that has to breathe, so cement repointing traps moisture and makes damp worse rather than better. Low ground near the Calder at Thornes and Stanley Ferry holds water.
Damp Proofing Huddersfield
The Colne and Holme valleys take far more wind-driven rain than lowland Yorkshire, and on solid gritstone there is no cavity to stop it. Penetrating damp is the leading cause here, not rising damp.
Damp Proofing Dewsbury
Sandstone cleaned of mill soot in the 1970s and 80s lost its hardened outer skin and became far more absorbent. Walls that shed water for a century now draw it in, and it is rarely recognised as the cause.

Coverage, common questions
What people ask us most before booking a survey.
If you are anywhere in South or West Yorkshire, almost certainly yes. The towns listed above are where we work most often, but we cover the surrounding villages too, and we regularly travel further for larger jobs and basement conversions. If you are not sure, call and ask. It takes a minute to confirm.
No. The survey fee and the quotation are the same wherever you are in our coverage area. If a property sits well outside it we will tell you before booking rather than adding a charge afterwards.
It depends on where you are and the time of year, with autumn and winter being our busiest period. Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham and Wakefield are usually the quickest. If the problem is urgent, for example an active leak or a property sale being held up by a retention, tell us and we will prioritise the appointment.
Regularly, across the whole area. We handle damp and mould reports for landlords needing to demonstrate compliance with the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act and Awaab's Law, report directly to the agent, and work around tenant access.
Yes. Reports are produced by CSRT qualified surveyors and we are a PCA approved contractor, which is what lenders and homebuyer surveyors look for when a retention has been placed on a purchase.
Yes. Alongside domestic work we survey and treat commercial premises, rented portfolios and listed and traditionally built buildings, where breathable lime-based repairs are usually the correct approach.
